Rain in California is as unpredictable as it is sporadic. That’s one of the reasons why all of our camera operators should always keep camera rain covers handy. But rain isn’t the only thing we’re up against when it comes to shooting outdoors. Camera covers are also useful for keeping dirt, dust, and sand from infiltrating your buttons, ports and media slots, as well as blocking moisture from extreme humidity or cold.
For those of you who shoot in typically stormier climates or who are frequently on location, protective camera covers are a known essential. Be sure to check for leaks on a regular basis, and always have a backup.
There are several types of rain covers you can buy for your camera, depending on your camera model and preference.
For example, Kata makes several camera rain covers designed for specific camera models, such as the CRC-11 Raincover pictured to the right. It custom-fits all of the Canon XL HD1/ XL2 / XL1s / XL1 units for precise protection and usability, so you don’t have to stop shooting when it starts raining. Kata also makes several other covers that custom-fit a variety of the latest pro-sumer and consumer camcorders on the market.
If you want to simply cover your gear on the fly or while on standby, try Visqueen Bag Style Camera Covers. They are extremely inexpensive (under $4 each for the “small” size cover pictured to the left) and fold up for handy compact storage. These transparent covers are more of a catch-all approach and work for any model within a size-range. If you want to keep shooting under one of these camera tarps, get crafty and slice an opening for your lens exactly where you need it. Since these Visqueen Camera Covers are “taller”, they also cover most of your tripod as well.
Filmtools sells 3 sizes of 3-Mil Visqueen Camera Covers (small, medium, and large), the largest of which are perfect for covering entire gear carts. Try a medium or large if you want to get under the cover too!
Other options include Harrison Water-Proof Standby Camera Covers with Drawstrings and The Original All-Weather Space Blanket.
